In the Gospel accounts, Jesus is said to rise from sleep hours before His disciples so He could go into a quiet place. If Jesus believed in not repeating vain prayers and keeping spoken prayers short, what would He be doing for hours on end, or even days on end, such as when He went into the wilderness for 40 days? In retreating to these places for long hours of solitude, Jesus was engaged in what we would call “meditation.” He was spending time being with God, listening to God, and learning from God. In short, Jesus meditated. Jesus stilled His mind to enter a state of complete God-consciousness.
To preach something is to announce that something is available to experience. Today, countless people are preaching about the kingdom of God. But we need these people to teach us how to experience the kingdom of God that is inherent within our souls. We need to understand it at the same level that Jesus experienced it every day of His human life.
The kingdom of God within has, for centuries, been shrouded in the veils of flawed understanding. Unfortunately, the mystery of the kingdom of God within has either been ignored altogether or redefined and misappropriated in ways that have neutered it of its significance.
